April (Katie Holmes) spends the day preparing Thanksgiving dinner for her estranged family while her boyfriend, Bobby (Derek Luke), is out running errands. Anything that can go wrong does and when her stove fails to turn on, April is forced to enlist the assistance of an eclectic collection of neighbors. Meanwhile, her estranged family travel from their home in suburbia to April’s apartment on the Lower East side of Manhattan.
This film, released in 2003, was shot in just 16 days at a budget of $100,000. To keep costs down, Peter Hedges was paid just $20 to write and direct. Pieces of April earned about $3.5 million worldwide.
