It’s that time of the year once again, leaves are changing colors, it’s getting colder outside and Halloween is almost upon us and that means it’s time for horror games. A staple genre, horror games earned their place in video game history with some AAA heavy hitters ranging from Alone in the Dark to Resident Evil to Silent Hill but there are also plenty of indie horror titles that can stand toe to toe with the best in the biz and deserve your time. Here are four indie horror games that you should definitely check out this Halloween season.
Emily Wants to Play
Developed by Shawn Hitchcock and published by SKH Apps, Emily wants to Play is a survival horror game in which you play a pizza delivery boy who becomes trapped in a mysterious house by the titular Emily and her 3 dolls and your only objective is to survive the night. Starting at 11pm and ending at 6am, you are tasked with surviving the entire night by overcoming your fears and Emily’s creepy dolls which can be “defeated” by specific means.

The Amnesia Collection
Released way back in 2010 by Frictional Games, Amnesia the Dark Descent is a first-person adventure survival game that puts you in the shoes of Daniel, a young man who wakes up in a dark castle with no memory of who you are or how you got there. Using only your wits, you explore the castle trying to regain your memory while trying to maintain your sanity by avoiding the monsters that inhabit the castle and other terrifying obstructions in your path. The Amnesia Collection collects not only the base Amnesia game but the two add-on stories Amnesia: Justine and A Machine for Pigs.

The Outlast Trilogy
Set within a dilapidated psychiatric hospital, Outlast has you assuming the role of investigative journalist Miles Upshur as navigates the hospital after an anonymous tip tells him of inhumane experiments being conducted at Mt Massive Asylum. After he arrives, Mike is shocked to see that the unhinged patients now roam the halls uninhibited and have slaughtered the hospital staff. Unable to back the way he came, Miles must press on and discover the horrifying secrets held within the asylum walls. Also included in the Outlast Trilogy is the DLC story Outlast: Whistleblower which is a side story centering on another character from the first game and the sequel Outlast 2 where you play as another journalist, Blake Langerman, as he and his wife roam the Arizona desert to explore the murder of a pregnant woman only to be separated in a helicopter crash. Now Blake must find his wife but instead, he discovers a village run by a cult who believe the end of the world is upon us.

Friday the 13th The Game
Based on the popular film franchise, Friday the 13th is a multiplayer survival game in which you play camp counselors at the ever-popular Camp Crystal Lake as they try to survive being hunted down by Jason Voorhees. As the counselors, you are tasked with escaping the nightmare by exploring the campgrounds looking for a means to escape while avoiding the psychotic killer by gathering supplies to escape by boat, car or even calling the local police. When placed in the shoes of Jason, your only objective is to KILL. Armed with various traps and supernatural powers, you systematically hunt down every other player and kill them in a variety of gruesome ways. If you’re a fan of the films and want to have some fun online with some friends, definitely pick this one up.
